Leadership Success Tips One of the benefits of leading is the rewards that it brings. For example, you generally receive more salary, have a bigger sphere of influence, are able to make change readily and get a huge amount of self motivation. On the other hand, being a leader brings with it some risks, the biggest one being to your survival and status.
So if you are a leader, are you really taking responsibility or is your tendency to pass the buck?
Taking responsibility
Many people say that they are willing to take responsibility and be accountable for the results that are delivered. At the same time, the words and actions are sometimes disconnected. So how might you know if you are taking more responsibility and less buck passing?
1. Your natural tendency is to admit your failings when things are not going as well as you might expect. By that, I mean standing back and taking a long hard look at what you are doing and what's working and what is not.
2. You are willing to make the tough decisions. From time to time, you will have to make big decisions which will impact on your staff, suppliers and even customers. It is easy to try and hide from these tough decisions and play it safe.
3. You don't look to some third party to solve your problems. One of the things I noticed working in large publicly funded organisations was just how willing people were to look to some third party to solve problems for them. While this might seem attractive, we are all at the end of the day paid to find solutions to problems rather than look to someone else to find the answers to our problems.
